Your guts will point you in the right direction. Distractions of your own and others intellects can make you surf naked on a bar thinking its was a clever idea. Its often tricky to be a human being, to embrace our mistakes and be nice to other people. Lets try it once more.

The festival EDGE OF WRONG is now in its ninth year and is an established and evolving production network and cultural exchanger. It is our intention to create a sustainable environment for art of an exploratory nature and of the highest quality. The festival is a hub for South African and Norwegian cultural exchange free of culteral, artistic or other prejudice. We also present artists from Sweden, Switserland and New York and are always looking to expand/include.

Nduduzo Makhathini & Tonny Kluften (SA & NO)

The talented pianist Nduduzo Makhathini is originally from KZN South Africa, now based in Johannesburg. A trendsetter and musical influencer of Jazz and soul music genres in South Africa. Has perfromed with the late Andille Mseleku, Brian Thusi, and Philani Ngidi, Feya Faku and Carlo Mombelli. In 2008, he toured in Europe with the late great Zim Ngqawana as well as a performance with Tonny Kluften.

Tonny Kluften has a highly characteristic approach to the double-bass. Using various bows, sticks and rubber band he is creating a characteristic and distinguished sound. He is playing in a trio with Tony Oxley and Ivar Grydeland, and is co-leading the improvising ensemble «No Spaghetti Edition» — an ensemble that includes and has included most of the leading Norwegian improvisers and improvisers from abroad. He has also played with these fine musicians: Peter Brötzman, Derek Bailey, Pat Thomas, Sunny Murray, Axel Dörner, Paal Nilssen-Love, Rolf Erik Nystrøm, Arve Henriksen, Maja Ratke, Frode Haltli, Bjørnar Andresen. He is currently active in the improvising band Huntsville alongside Ivar Grydeland and Ingar Zach.

Bjarne Kvinnsland (NO)

Bjarnes artistic background is rooted in music and sound art, and is for the time being also involved in projects with photography, lights, sculpture, dance, theatre, text and film. Through working with projects with a focus on new technology he has specialised in art related to new technology. He is also invested intensly in recording sounds from all over the world, insects, glaciers, man made noise etc etc. He has yet to record sounds from South Africa.

Tonny and Kesivan met on the Norwegian EDGE OF WRONG in 2011. They performed as a trio with Chris Engel who is now reciding in Ireland and will not be present at this concert. The third person is still to be announced.

Born in East London, Kesivan Naidoo is a South African jazzdrummer known from bands such as Tribe, Babu, Restless Natives and Closet Snare. He was the youngest person to win Southern African Music Rights Organisations’ Overseas Scholarship Competition and studied under indian guru Professor Sanjay Bandophadyah.
Since 2006 Naidoo has been running a company together with trupmeter Lee Thompson called “Silent Revolution Productions” dedicated to promoting art music in South Africa.

SUDDEN INFANT (CH)

Joke Lanz born 1965 in Basel, Switzerland, Currently based in Berlin.
Joke Lanz is one of the most prolific and profound artists working in the border zones where performance and body art meet Improvisation and Noise.
In his Sudden Infant guise, Lanz creates a unique blend of physical sound poetry and epileptic noise bursts, using contact microphones, loops, tapes etc.
The result is an extreme form of musique concrète that juxtaposes spasmodic gibbering with a battery of disorienting electronics.
Has worked as garbageman, cleaner, caregiver, night watchman, farmer, record dealer, administrative assistant, bike messenger, chocolate manufacturer, technician, housekeeper, and more.

Dizu Plaatjies (SA)

Dizu Plaatjies is the founder and former leader of the South African group, Amampondo. He is a graduate of the University of Cape Town School of Music and now lectures in their Department of Ethnomusicology in African Music. Since leaving Amampondo he has started a new ensemble called Ibuyambo. Dizu and the new group have presented numerous shows in a number of European countries, and perform regularly in South Africa.
Plaatjies is the son of an African traditional healer and late lady teacher Ntombiza, has himself been initiated in the Xhosa/Pondo tribal tradition. His interest in African percussion music has taken him to numerous countries on the continent with the result that he now owns a substantial collection of handmade musical instruments from sub-Saharan Africa. His latest recordings made for the label Mountain Records, entitled, Ibuyambo (2005) and African Kings (2008), illustrate this knowledge and interest.

Josh is an artist living in Cape Town, South Africa. He has a masters degree in visual arts and a bachelor in electromechanical engineering from University of Cape Town.
As an artist, Ginsburg works with video installations, performance, presentations and research related works. Projects like Breaeth Control (2012), Something Elastic (2012), Blue Line (2013) and Black Maps (2013). In 2012 he worked as an artist in residence at the Ampersand Foundation in New York and in 2013 at Very Real Time in Cape Town.
He teaches at University of Cape Town and at the art institute at Stellenbosch University and also works as a curator and partner at Evil Son, Research Art and Atlantic House in Cape Town

Morten Minothi is the brain child of EDGE OF WRONG. The festival came about after his music studies in Cape Town. Tirelessly seeking outwards, away from traditional music practices he is now committed to pushing himself, the volume and the guitar itself to physically strenuous extremes often destructive.

Makeson Browne, Shane Cooper and Morten Minothi Kristiansen (SA & NO)

A reunion of three dedicated explorers. They played and recorded numerous times in Mortens house and performed often at The Independent Theatre during 2004 – 5 at a time when the theatre housed a wider range of musics than it does today. Shane and Morten met at South African College of Music and played together in various constellations and later teamed up with Makeson. They share a keen urge to find and push the limits of what music is and can be. It has been ten years since they first played. A live recording of one of their first shows will be available for purchase on the festival.

Jill Richard & Christophe Fellay (SA & CH)

The « Gardens of the Equinox » project is the result of a meeting in Johannesburg, between the pianist Jill Richards and the composer and musician Christophe Fellay. Jill Richards, South Africa’s most acclaimed contemporary pianist, interprets Christophe Fellay’s compositions while taking part in a sound experiment resulting from the dialogue between piano and percussion instruments.
Christophe Fellay is a composer, musician, drummer, sound artist and performer living in Switzerland. He has composed music for orchestras, string ensembles, string quartet, chamber orchestras, jazz ensembles and solo instruments. He made several interdisciplinary works including sound installations and performances. His own artistic research area is about acoustics, architecture and the interaction between humans and machines.
Jill Richards is a South African pianist specialising in new music. Versatile and dynamic, her interests range from Bach to free improvisation. Jill improvises with sound artist João Orecchia, composer-percussionist Lukas Ligeti and visual artist Marcus Neustetter and recently performed with renowned Spanish composer and sound artist Francisco Lopez. Jill also worked with the late Zim Ngqawana.

T.E.P.P. Technologically Enabled Performance Practice – a PhD recital.

This premiere performance is the realisation of five years of research and development and features a unique approach towards musical.

The discipline of organology clearly separates music produced on stringed instruments (Idiophones) and music produced through various electronic means (Quintephones). The instrument developed as part of this research project consists of a loop and feedback system constructed to tackle this divide in a number of ways: Firstly the instrument system itself is completely software free, no Pc’s or laptops are involved whatsoever in the performance and further no music is pre-prepared in a recorded audio format whatsoever – all music is improvised wholly live.

Further the guitar system has feedback systems within its singular design – the guitar is a traditional jazz guitar with certain effects and signal splitters built in, producing three signal paths on output. These three signals are both modified via internal effects as well as further signal modifiers housed outside the instrument. Additionally a selection of parameters on various effects units are controlled via a mechanical exoskeleton which generates variables. Thus the guitar can be performed with in a full and somewhat traditionally instrumental sense, drawing on all of the instruments history, techniques and improvisational methods along side enabling improvised electronic interventions through the extended upper body of the performer.

Lastly the three signals are fed out to three separate stages for the other improvisers – theses are at certain points interacting with the whole ensemble and at certain points isolated. All this will be an improvised reading of a especially composed graphic score.

Nicolas Collins (US)

Nicolas Collins was “a pioneer in the use of microcomputers in live performance, and has made extensive use of ‘home-made’ electronic circuitry, radio, found sound material, and transformed musical instruments.” He has presented over 300 concerts and installations in Europe, Japan, and the United States as a solo artist and as a member of various ensembles. He is a member of The Impossible Music Group with David Weinstein, David Shea, Ted Greenwald, and Tim Spelios.
Collins is a prominent curator of performance and installation art, and has been a curator, policy adviser, and board member for numerous cultural organizations. For example, in the early 1990s he was both artistic Co-Director at STEIM (Studio for Electro Instrumental Music), located in Amsterdam and a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) composer-in-residence in Berlin.Collins is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Leonardo Music Journal, a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the MIT Press. He is also the chair of the sound department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Patric Thorman (SE)

Patric Thorman (b. 1983 – Sweden) – double bass
Besides the use of unique, delicate techniques and external preparations, Thorman also embraces more conventional ways of playing the double bass, allowing the pure gut strings and the wooden body of his instrument, in full, to play a significant role in a broad dynamic musical palette. With a great amount of energy, perceptive interplay and lust for experimenting he creates progressive music with great imagination. Thorman has worked with musicians such as Fred Lonberg-Holm, Sten Sandell, Per-Åke Holmlander, Raymond Strid, David Stackenäs, Sofia Jernberg, Katt Hernandez, Fredrik Ljungkvist, Audrey Chen, Lene Grenager.

ASIS (SA & FR)

Cape Town-based free improvisers Niklas Zimmer (drums), Manfred Zylla (brass, strings) and Garth Erasmus (reeds, blik`nsnaar) are the core members of the musical odyssey named As Is. Co-founded by Brendon Bussy in 2009, this ensemble routinely features an ever-changing roster of collaborators, and operates in performance situations that are equally diverse and interesting, such as dance, theatre, film and art exhibitions. Each member is a respected visual artist in his own right in South Africa. The collective music-making of As Is has evolved from a very open, fluid and lively creative process. In collaboration with poet and filmmaker Aryan Kaganof, As Is mutates into the wonderful weirdness of UNGA DADA. For EDGE OF WRONG 2014, they will be joined by Alex Merancienne (alto sax) from France.

Glenn Cornett (US)

Glenn Cornett is a composer and performer (electronics, guitar, keyboards) in New York City. He studied musicology, music performance, composition and theory during undergraduate and graduate training.
In 2009, Glenn started the New Spectrum Foundation, which has supported a number of artists and events in the new music arena. In 2011, he opened Spectrum, a contemporary performance venue and gallery on Manhattan’s Lower East Side that now presents about 500 events per year.
Glenn works during the day as a biotechnology entrepreneur, running companies focused on cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders. Dr. Cornett has an MD with Distinction in Research from the University of Michigan and a PhD in neuroscience from UCLA. His dissertation was on deep brain responses to musical stimuli.
