Carlo Mombelli (electric bass, manipulated springs, exhaust pipe and stylophone), and Marcus Wyatt (trumpet and sonic designs) present a set of electro acoustic improvisations.

Carlo Mombelli was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He has recorded and performed around the world with amongst others, Egberto Gismonti, Lee Konitz, Mick Goodrick and Charlie Mariano. Carlo was composer in residence at Wits University in 2004. He has composed music for many films and ballets and has recorded seven CD’s of his own works. In 2007 Carlo received his doctorate in music from Wits University Johannesburg.

Marcus Wyatt grew up in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He studied classical music and played with orchestras in and around PE, until he was called up to the SA Naval Band for national service. It was in this time that Marcus developed a love for jazz, and decided to further his studies at UCT College of music. He completed his degree, majoring in composition and arrangement, and won various competitions. He has appeared on many CD’s and recorded many of his own projects.

Their concert will feature special guest from Switserland Saadet saadet_turkoez.jpgTürkoz. Experimental vocalist who performs with leading figures in improvised music such as Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, Mark Dresser and many many more...a MUST!

Shane Cooper & Chris Engel Duo

chri.jpg Chris Engel began playing saxophone at the age of 10 and since then has performed at the Cape Town International Jazz festival with world renowned American jazz artists Joe McBride, Gerald Veasley and Kenny Blake. In 2006 Engel studied at Norway's prestigious institution, The Norwegian Academy of Music. While in education Engel was involved with a successful South African youth jazz development project called The Little Giants. During his time in the band he performed alongside great jazz artists such as Bheki Mseleku and Mervin Africa. He is well known for his performances with group Restless Natives.

Shane Coopershane.jpg One of the most in-demand Bass players around, Shane Cooper was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. In 2005, he relocated to Cape Town where he began his BMus jazz performance degree at the South African College of Music at UCT. He completed his undergraduate degree on electric bass in November 2008.   He has performed around South Africa and abroad with various local and international artists such as The Restless Natives, Babu, The Bokani Macha Trio, Zim Ngqawana, Melanie Scholtz, Fly Paper Jet, Mike Del Farro, and Louis Moholo.

He is an active composer both for own bands and for others. From being a classical pianist his main focus has now moved to modern jazz, experimental music, rock, avant-garde and electronic music. Studying jazz-piano under Misha Alperin at the Norwegian Academy of Music the autumn 2004. Øystein has in addition to numerous tours in Iceland, Russia, France, Poland, Netherlands, Sweden and Czech Republic played at renowned festivals such as  Molde Jazzfestival, Murmansk jazzfestival, Oslo Jazzfestival, Lillehammer Jazzfestival, Ungjazz, Sounds of the Nordic countries festival.

Only 21 years of age, is fast becoming one of Cape Town’s most accomplished jazz pianists and is already a prolific composer in his own right. In 2005, he won an award for the best original composition in the inaugural FMR/Pick ‘n Pay Travel awards. Shepherd has performed at concerts & festivals in South Africa and abroad with the likes of Zim Ngqawana, Errol Dyers, Robbie Jansen, Louis Moholo, Mccoy Mrubata & Hilton Schilder. January 2009 saw the launch of Shepherd’s Debut CD, “fineART”.

Omenås / Skarbøomenaasskarboe.jpg

Improvisors Øyvind Skarbø and Stian Omenås both come from the same part of Western Norway, where they played many years together in the big band Big Odd Band. Today, as a duo, they do not play standards, but they improvise freely. This is two musicians with a good focus on the music of the moment. They are both very active in the Norwegian music scene playing a varied mixture of improvisational music from rock to jazz in various projects.

Brydon Bolton (Double Bass), based in Cape Town for the last 15 years. Primarily a double bass player, he is known to be always looking for ways to expand his performances and the sonic environment in which he performs. He has been actively involved in many different styles of performance and has collaborated with an equally wide variety of artists.

Frank Mallows (Vibraphone) is a versatile percussionist, with a strong leaning toward the mallet percussion instruments performs regularly in a wide range of musical settings. These include classical concerts with professional orchestras around South Africa, as Duo FourIVTwo with Magda de Vries and various jazz ensembles. He is currently the Principal of the Beau Soleil Music Centre in Kenilworth, Cape Town, a position he has held for the past 16 years. He is also the percussion and drum set lecturer at the South African College of Music (University of Cape Town). Prior to his appointment at Beau Soleil, Frank held the position of Sub-Principal Percussionist and Assistant Manager of the CAPAB Orchestra, in Cape Town. Frank holds a BSc (Civil Eng.) and MSc as well as a MMus (vibraphone performance) from the University of Cape Town.

Simon Annett (Drums) is a sought after Afro – Latin drummer who plays regularly in Johannesburg and Cape Town. He has appeared at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival with the Kolo Novo Movie Band and plays regularly with Adamu and Buddy Wells.

Ivan Mazuze, Texito Langa & Gorm Helfjord

Ivan Mazuze (Saxophone), born and educated partly in Maputo, Mozambique, saxophonist Ivan Mazuze came to Cape Town in 2000, where he is currently based. Ivan has performed with top South African internationally acclaimed artists, including Jonathan Butler, Alvin Dyers, Jimmy Dludlu, Judith Sephuma, Vusi Khumalo, Hotep Galeta as well as top bands such as Dondo, Tucan Tucan and Loading Zone. He has been featured at numerous international music festivals and has won various jazz awards.

Texito Langa (Drums) was born in Maputo, Mozambique He has performed with many groups including: Tucan Tucan, Herbs and Roots, E S B Millennium Drum and Makumba Habana as well as appearing at many international jazz festivals

Gorm Helfjord (Guitar) is a session/freelance guitarist based in Cape Town, South Africa . He grew up in Norway and studied at Sund FHS in Norway, University of KwaZulu Natal and University of Cape Town.
